As the advisor of Code Club on the Palm Beach Gardens Campus and also the PALS leader for Computer Science Chair Dr. Kaye (aka Dr. Sibayan), I’m thrilled about everything that’s going on this semester!
AI Hackathon: Not long ago, only 0.5% of the population could produce code, and only then after studying it intensely for a very long period of time. Now, thanks to AI, anyone who has an internet connection and the ability to write in English can easily produce functioning code. This has the potential to be the single most democratizing event in technology in our lifetimes - but only if we make use of it! Schools like Berkeley have embraced AI in hackathons, such as one described as “the Woodstock of AI”. Even students in the arts or humanities that have no background in programming are finally able to participate with the help of this power tool. Well, we’re going to do the same thing here at the PBG campus this November. Stay tuned for updates.
IT in a Cup: On Tuesdays from 2pm to 5pm in LC217, Dr. Kaye and I will be hosting an “IT in a Cup” seminar series. These single serving extracurricular talks will not require any prerequisite knowledge. Each week we’re talking about something else, so if you learn about this halfway through the semester that won’t hurt you. Join in any time, and bring a friend! We’ll be releasing a schedule shortly.
PALS: I’ll be conducting the PALS sessions for Dr. Kaye’s COP1000 courses on Tuesdays from 12-2 pm, and again on Fridays from 12-2 pm on Zoom at THIS LINK. Coming to these sessions and meeting your classmates and working in a team is a great habit to get into.
Gamify Your Classes: I taught myself to program during the pandemic largely by making several math related game prototypes (they’re playable but not polished).
Polar Pirates - shoot pirate ships by manipulating radius and angle (relates to concepts from Trigonometry, MAC1114).
Confidence Intervals - as a doctor during a bioweapons attack, you’ll use confidence intervals (which are taught in STA2023) to decide who to treat.
PrimeFall - a space invaders style game where you shoot composite numbers and get resources by letting the prime numbers through.
This unique experience allows me to help you to do the same as a hobby and a learning tool. If you think it would be fun to turn a concept from one of your classes into a game, make an appointment with me and let’s get started!
Codingame: it takes a ton of practice to learn to program, and the funnest project oriented place to build bots that I’ve found is Codingame. If you want help with one of the challenges, book an appointment and we’ll practice the associated coding techniques like while loops, conditionals, lists, and so on that compose these games and challenges.
We’ve got a great semester together on the horizon, so please don’t hesitate to reach out!
